Forklift mast parts guide

Forklift Mast Lift Chains: References, Inspection and Replacement Decisions

A mast chain carries the lifting force between the lift cylinder, chain anchors, rollers and fork carriage. Chain pitch, plate arrangement, length, end fittings and mast configuration must agree with the truck. A chain that looks similar or is described only by forklift capacity is not a confirmed replacement.

Where the chain works

Lift chains run over mast sheaves and connect the cylinder or fixed anchor points to the fork carriage. Duplex, triplex and free-lift masts use different chain paths and lengths.

Why capacity alone is insufficient

Two trucks with the same rated capacity can use different mast heights, chain pitches, plate counts, anchor fittings or production versions. Confirm the truck and mast before ordering.

What proves the reference

Use the chain reference, forklift model and serial number, mast type, closed and extended mast height, chain markings, end fittings and clear photographs of the full chain route.

Inspection points that matter

ElongationMeasure chain wear using the method and allowable limit specified for the truck or chain. Visual appearance alone cannot confirm elongation.
Plates and pinsLook for cracked plates, turned or protruding pins, corrosion, stiff joints and impact damage. A cracked or structurally damaged chain is not repaired by welding.
Anchors and sheavesInspect anchor bolts, clevises, sheaves, bearings and alignment. A new chain fitted to damaged or misaligned hardware can wear quickly.
LubricationUse the lubricant and interval specified by the truck or chain manufacturer. Clean off abrasive contamination before lubrication; do not use a method that forces dirt into the joints.
Chain pairWhere the mast uses paired chains, compare both sides for length, tension and wear. Follow the manufacturer’s rule on replacing chains as a matched set.

Workshop judgment: uneven carriage height or noisy lifting is not automatically a chain fault. Chain adjustment, mast rollers, sheaves, anchors, cylinder movement and carriage alignment must be checked together.

Genuine, identifiable OEM and lower-cost replacements

Genuine chain references are the safest choice when mast data is incomplete or fleet policy requires traceable original parts. An identifiable OEM-quality chain can be considered when pitch, plate construction, tensile specification, length and end fittings are documented. A low price without material, construction and traceability information is a poor basis for a load-bearing component.

Market prices change with chain size, total length, end fittings, supply level and whether the quotation covers one chain or a matched pair. Online prices are not comparable until those details agree.

Information required for a chain quotation

Send the forklift model and serial number, mast type and height, existing chain number or markings, photographs of both end fittings and chain route, required quantity and any measured wear information.

Why the correct match matters

Mast parts must match the truck capacity, mast type and lifting arrangement. Chain pitch, length, fork class and mounting dimensions vary between mast configurations.

Reference first

We check 162357 instead of quoting from a general description alone.

Truck confirmation

The model, serial number and component details help us confirm the correct version.

Visible order check

Reference labels and product condition can be photographed for confirmation before shipment.

Send what you have

Send the part number, nameplate or clear photos you have. Our parts team will check the reference against the truck details and tell you exactly what else is needed.
