Forklift Controller Selection & Common Controller Systems
Compare the motor technology, control duty and complete controller reference before ordering. The same enclosure can contain different hardware, software and vehicle settings.

Electronic-control assembly reference AIMB158-720000-000. The assembly number does not establish the controller’s full specification or software configuration.
Traction, lift and steering need different controls
| Control duty | Information to compare | Associated equipment |
|---|---|---|
| Traction | AC induction, permanent-magnet or DC motor; controller label and feedback configuration | Drive motor, speed feedback, brake and vehicle interlocks |
| Pump | Motor type, lift commands and pump-motor duty | Hydraulic pump motor and control inputs |
| Steering | Complete steering controller and actuator references | Steering feedback and safety configuration |
| Combined controller / vehicle control unit | Which functions are integrated; network and software version | Display, BMS, subordinate inverters and vehicle harness |
Manufacturer families and their differences
These are documented manufacturer examples, not a ranking, an Authpart stock list or a truck compatibility list. Voltage options belong to particular models within each family.
| Family | Motor / function | Electrical and communication reference | Configuration check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Curtis 1236E / 1238E | AC induction; traction or pump | 1236E: listed nominal classes 24–80 V; 1238E extends to 84/96 V; CANopen-compatible | Exact suffix, voltage variant, VCL application and motor tuning. Do not transfer the SE family’s PMAC capability to an E unit. |
| Curtis 1204M / 1205M | DC series motors; traction or pump | Model-specific DC voltage/current; do not assume CAN | Full model, throttle input and vehicle settings |
| ZAPI ACE2 NewGen | AC inverter family | 24 V, 36–48 V, 72–80 V or 96 V variants; CAN; connector versions differ | Ampseal connector variant, baseplate/cooling and application software |
| BorgWarner / former Sevcon Gen4 | AC Gen4, Dragon8 and DC Gen4 are separate designs | Use the exact size and model; no portfolio-wide voltage match | Motor technology, power stage, harness and parameter file |
| Dana / SME Smartmotion | AC-S1 / AC-M1 single motor; AC-M2 dual motor | AC-S1 24 or 36–48 V; other models include 72–80 V; CANopen / serial | Single/dual architecture, motor and SmartView/TM4 TAU service requirements |
| Inmotion ACS Gen7 | Induction, PMAC, synchronous reluctance or BLDC configurations | Family nominal range 24–96 V; CANopen / J1939 options | Exact configured motor, Ampseal variant and approved service-tool access |
An assembly number is not a controller specification
AIMB158-720000-000 is an existing electronic-control assembly reference. Read the controller’s own label as well: the assembly reference does not establish its voltage, motor technology or firmware.

Existing assembly reference; controller configuration remains to be checked.
Before a replacement is accepted
- Compare the complete hardware code and every suffix, not only 1238, ACE2 or Gen4.
- Record the truck model/serial, motor label, controller label and connector faces. Photograph the installed wiring without disconnecting live equipment.
- Confirm whether the unit is supplied configured, needs a vehicle parameter file, or requires commissioning by a qualified technician. Ask whether the quoted supply includes the required software or tool access.
- A matching plug or nominal voltage does not establish pinout, CAN messages, motor feedback or vehicle interlock compatibility.
Diagnostics and programming are separate purchase questions
Curtis 1313 handheld and 1314 PC tools, Dana SmartView and Inmotion ServiceTool illustrate different service ecosystems. Tool version, adapter, licence and permission must suit the exact controller; purchasing a cable does not grant programming rights.
Ask about the part you need
A part number is optional. Send it if you have it, or choose the identification route that fits your information. No technical field below is required.
