Forklift EPS Controller Selection: Motor, Sensor and CAN Interfaces

An EPS controller must match the steering motor and the signals that tell it where to steer. Compare the complete controller code, steering-command input, wheel-position feedback and vehicle configuration—not battery voltage alone.

Published steering-controller examples

These manufacturer examples help interpret an existing label or specification. They are not a cross-reference list, a stock list or a statement that one controller can replace another.

Curtis 1222 is designed for AC induction steering gearmotors. The specified motor technology must agree with the steering system before the controller is selected.

Steering command and wheel feedback are not the same signal

The command tells the system the requested steering movement; feedback reports position. Record both devices separately, even when their connectors look similar. Curtis lists CAN, quadrature and several analog/position-signal options for the 1222 family. ZAPI lists twin-potentiometer or incremental-encoder inputs for the examples above. The configured vehicle may use only one of the available arrangements.

A connector match does not establish a CAN match

Compare the connector housing and keying first, then the pin assignment and vehicle wiring reference. “CAN” alone does not identify the messages, baud rate, node settings or safety behaviour expected by the truck. A matching plug is useful evidence, not permission to connect an unverified replacement.

If the old controller still communicates, a qualified service provider may be able to record its identification and configuration. Send the available report with the part request; do not alter steering settings to test compatibility.

Check the programming requirement before ordering

The Curtis 1222 reference includes programmable homing, centre offset and end-stop settings. Ask whether the proposed replacement is supplied with the correct vehicle configuration and what commissioning is still required. No universal plug-and-play replacement is established here.

  • Known controller code: send it with the steering motor and sensor references.
  • Only a truck model: add the serial number and clear controller-label photos.
  • No label or uncertain steering type: send an overall steering-system photo and close-ups of the motor and connectors.
  • Retain any fault-code or diagnostic report as supporting evidence; a fault code alone is not a replacement part number.
